Mike Wilson joins Apex as Assistant Director of Coaches

Apex Soccer Academy is pleased to announce Coach Mike Wilson will join our staff as the Assistant Director of Coaches effectively immediately. 

Mike Wilson has over 20 years of coaching experience at youth, high school and college levels.  Coach Wilson holds an Advanced National, National and Goalkeeping Level 1 Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches organization; as well as the USSF National ‘D’ License.  Mike comes to Apex Soccer Academy from the Indianola Soccer Tribe where he has volunteered at various capacities since 2012.  Most recently, he has operated as the Director of Coaches since 2017, leading over 20 volunteer coaches for all age groups serving its 200 members. In 2018-2019 season, he helped launch the Academy program serving as the director and coach of the 9U boys and 10U girls team.  

Mike began his coaching career in 1998 when hired by his college coach and mentor, Aziz Haffar, at West Des Moines Valley High School.   He was head coach for the freshman and assistant coach for the boys varsity team. Other high school positions include assistant coach for Des Moines Lincoln High School (girls), Indianola High School (boys & girls) and boys junior varsity head coach Mounds Park Academy (St. Paul, Minn.).

Wilson graduated from Simpson College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management  and went on to earn his Master of Arts in Human Performance/Sports Administration from Minnesota State University – Mankato.  He worked as a graduate assistant in sports information and served as the assistant men’s soccer coach and goalkeeper coach at Gustavus Adolphus College (Saint Peter, Minn.) 2003-2005.  In 2005, Wilson returned to his alma mater leading the Storm for six seasons, guiding them to 5 appearances in the conference tournament and earning NSCAA Team Academic awards in 2008 and 2010.  

Mike grew up on the southside of Des Moines earning all-conference honors at Des Moines Lincoln High School and played select soccer for Dowling Soccer Club and Waukee Soccer Club.  Wilson went on to play collegiate soccer at Simpson College and is the only player in the Storm program history to earn first team all-conference honors all four years.  He was selected as team captain for three years and named to the NSCAA All-West Region second team as a senior.   
Mike resides in Indianola with his wife Sue and daughters Joviee (10) and Sophia (8).
